Why Butterfly Tree?

Tree symbolizes groundedness, deep-rooted strength, resilience, and the wisdom of the ages. Tree is the witness, observing the passage of time and often able to see seven generations and beyond. Tree is the archetypal mother, nurturing and sheltering a great many other beings. Tree is living proof of the vast forests that can grow from the tiniest seed.

Butterfly symbolizes freedom, lightness, and the ability to fly. It is soft, sweet, gentle, comes in all the colours of the rainbow, and takes the time to appreciate the flowers. Above all, Butterfly symbolizes transformation, as the caterpillar weaves itself into a cocoon (perhaps not so dissimilar to the ancient yogis meditating in caves) for a deep period of introspective growth before emerging with a radiant new form, newfound abilities, and likely a whole new perspective on life.

The approach of Butterfly Tree Yoga is to first develop a strong deep-rooted foundation to provide grounding, nourishment and stable support (Tree), and then from there it is possible to spread one's wings and fly, charting one's own path of transformation and freedom (Butterfly). From Earth to Sky, from Muladhara to Sahasrara Chakras, from the gross to the subtle - first we root, then we rise.

For me, the reason I offer yoga therapy is what some might call "pay it forward," "the ripple effect," or even "the butterfly effect." At a point in my life somewhere around the vicinity of rock bottom, I made a pact with the Universe that "If I get through this, I will spend my life helping other people through this." I did in fact survive, and yoga has been the greatest tool for my own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing and transformation. As I have been so blessed to receive the tremendous gift of yoga in my life, so I am inspired to share this gift with you.
